Exactly one year ago, Joomla! 1.0 was released. Today, Joomla! releases the next generation framework built from the ground up.
Joomla! 1.5 beta
delivers more simplicity for the user and much more power for developers. The innovation and skill of our development team is clearly setting higher and higher standards.
But before we get into reams of detail about just how good Joomla! 1.5 beta is, remember this is a beta and is not yet ready for use on a production website.
We need the community to roll up its sleeves and seek out bugs (and feed this back to the development working group), before we enter the release candidate phase.
Joomla! 1.5 beta marks the most significant watershed in Joomla's history. This effort represents a complete refactoring of the Joomla! codebase and leverages a new API
that allows developers to deliver more robust and innovative applications than ever before. Joomla! 1.5 means freedom of choice: you choose how it operates, you choose how
it integrates, you choose what the output is ... you choose how users are authenticated. For both the user and the developer, Joomla! 1.5 beta is a simplified yet more
powerful system, and from the developer's perspective, provides them with the freedom and flexibilty to build anything they want. Lead developer Johan Janssens
said 12 October is a giant step for the Joomlasphere! "Open source projects are delivering incredible power and features to end users — we've taken things
a step further by building an opportunity for unlimited extendibility for developers," he said. "Once developers get to see how easily 1.5 can leverage their own
ideas as plugins, they will certainly be a big part of continuing Joomla's incredible growth. You only need to take a look at the Joomlasphere to understand how amazing
the future can be." Write Comment (1 Comments) |

Joomla! won Best Linux / Open Source Project at UK Linux and Open Source Awards 2006, in London tonight.
This is the second year running, the Joomla! team has won the prestigious award. Louis Landry, Johan Janssens and Peter Russell accepted the award from LinuxUser and Developer magazine publisher Maggie Meer.
Johan described the win for Joomla! as "one for the community". "The buzz around the Joomla! project is driven by our huge user base and this translates into what is fast becoming the most popular open source framework going," Johan said.
Chris Adams, of Rochen, who is a major sponsor of the Joomla! project was nominated as Best Linux Open Source ISP / Internet Host. Unfortunately, Rochen missed out this year but it was great to have Rochen with us to celebrate. "Chris and the Rochen guys are part of the Joomla! family ... this is as much Rochen's award as it is the developers and the communities."

10:30 AM on Sunday 30th July saw almost ninety users and developers of Joomla! come together at the Golden Lion Hotel in Leeds for the first ever Joomla! day UK, and for anyone who is unsure, Joomla! is a free CMS (content management Systems), and as Brian Teeman explained it is free in two ways, it is free as in it costs you nothing to download and use, but it is also free as in free speech, because it is GPL licensed piece of software, allowing the user to make whatever changes to the software they like.
For 7 hours the users and developers watched 6 different presentations by key figures in the Joomla! community.
Brian Teeman, who also organized the event, spoke about what Joomla! is, and why he believes it is used to power about 5 million websites, and then the benefits of using Joomla! in non-profit
organizations, then Barrie North went over the basics of creating a template, why Google is Blind, so you should design your Templates with a screen reader in mind to ensure the best search engine rank.
